The Queensland Government is committed to establishing the State as the centre of excellence in biotechnology in the Asia Pacific.
The Government's integrated approach - from discovery through scale-up manufacturing to clinical trials - and progressive regulatory environment have created a dynamic and growing industry.
Queensland’s biotechnology industry is made up of some 88 companies and 68 biotechnology-related research institutes, who together employed over 5,200 people and generated an estimated AUS$690 million in revenues in 2004-05.
The Queensland Government – Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) works closely with key regional economic development stakeholders, industries, businesses, research organisations and universities, and government bodies to achieve the best outcomes for the State.
The Queensland Biotechnology Strategic Plan
In 2005, the Queensland Government released its Biotechnology Strategic Plan which sets out a 20-year vision and a five-year action plan to accelerate growth and develop Queensland into a regional hub for biotechnology.
The Queensland Government and the industry's vision is that the biotechnology sector will employ more than 16,000 people and generate $4 billion in revenues by 2025. The Strategic Plan incorporates actions
across:
- the key sectors of health and medical, agricultural, environmental and industrial biotechnology, and
- the cross-sectoral drivers of industry financing, skills, infrastructure, strategic alliances and communication.
